Lab Life

There is joy in sharing.
As a scientist in progress, I want to share the things that I have found to be interesting in the laboratory and some random photos from my experiments. I promise to do my best to "laymanize" my posts in this page. I am open to any technical inquiry. :)

TOPIC 1: Isolate DMF78

Isolate DMF78: My baby

I have been working with this microorganism since 2008. What is interesting about Isolate DMF78 is that it has the capability of producing an enzyme, called amylase, that has the capability of degrading (chop-chop molecularly) starch. The best thing about it is that it does the chop-chop process at room temperature! So we save energy and production costs.

What is the importance of chop-chopping starch?
Well, the products after the degradation of starch can be used to produce high value products such as lactic acid, biodegradable plastics, ethanol, high fructose syrup used as sweetener, and the list continues.

But wait, there's more!
What makes this microorganism more amazing is that it can produce lactic acid on its own without the addition or use of any other enzymes. Thus the use of this microorganism entails only a single step lactic acid production process. Cool, right?

  1. sheb, lactic acid ky milk acid na di buh? ako kblo lng mgproduce ky animals ug humans hehehe so asa n xa gikan? (jugo jud kog ani sheb hehe). pagikaw lage magexplain sheb kay cool, pagchem teacher kay... booooooring hehehe

  2. Yep, commonly known as milk acid na sya. Everything kay short cut for this microorganism! Kaya tipid na tipid and producers sa production costs. Ang Isolate DMF78 kay bacteria pero naa sad uban reports from other microorganism na naga produce enzyme but not direct lactic acid production. nice noh? hehehe! FYI- patent on process pra ani. :D

Ganahan man sad ko anag comment nimo ui. Ma inspire ko mudugang ug posts aning page. Salamat! Makasabaot unta mo sa sunod nakong mga i post. chos!
